Questions Before You Book A Driver

Yes, you can hire a professional to drive a rental moving truck for a long-distance move. You rent the truck and arrange loading and unloading. Rented Truck Driver provides the driver, coordinates the driver’s travel, and drives the loaded truck to your destination. The driver must be authorized on the rental agreement before taking the wheel.

Booking and the rental truck

Do I rent the truck, or do you?

For this driver-only service, you rent the truck in your name. You also arrange the loading and unloading, either yourself or through local labor. We supply and coordinate the driver. If you need a truck-with-driver arrangement instead, see that separate service.

Which rental trucks can your drivers operate?

We commonly drive approved U-Haul and Budget rental trucks and consider other rental arrangements individually. Tell us the rental company, truck size, route, and any towing plans before booking. We will confirm whether we can accept the particular rental arrangement. Do not assume every rental company permits a paid third-party driver under its consumer contract.

Can someone else legally drive my rental truck?

A person other than the renter can drive only when the rental company permits it and the person meets its requirements and is properly listed on the rental agreement. Our driver must be named as a Primary or Additional Driver before pickup. Keep the rental agreement in the truck throughout the move. Read the more detailed rental-agreement answer.

Do you load or unload the truck?

No. Our drivers transport the truck; they do not pack, load, or unload it. You can load it yourself or hire loaders and unloaders at each end. Make sure the truck is ready at the departure time in your Final Agreement.

Can I ride in the truck with the driver?

No. We do not carry clients or other passengers in the truck for liability reasons. You can travel separately while your driver transports your belongings.

Your driver and communication

How are your drivers screened?

We interview and vet our drivers, check driving credentials, and arrange background screening. We look for substantial experience operating large vehicles. Meet our drivers and ask us about the screening of the person assigned to your move. We do not publish a fixed driver count because the active roster can change.

When will I know who my driver is?

Before you commit under the Final Agreement, we provide the assigned driver’s name, phone number, email address, a biography link, and images of the front and back of the driver’s license. After you pay the deposit, we can provide that driver’s background check.

How will we communicate during the trip?

About four days before pickup, we start a group text with you, the assigned driver, our office, and Frank. You can ask questions before the move and receive progress and overnight-stop updates through delivery. Drivers do not text while driving.

Will the driver be local to me?

We consider the route and driver availability when assigning the job. The driver may travel to your pickup location and travel home after delivery. We coordinate that travel and show its cost in the Final Agreement; do not assume the driver is based near either end of your move.

Quote, travel, and payment

How much does it cost to hire a moving truck driver?

The price depends on your route, truck size, dates, driver availability, travel arrangements, and whether you are towing. Request a free quote for your move. We then prepare a Final Agreement with the specific costs before you pay the deposit. We do not use an old published per-mile range as a substitute for your actual quote.

Is my instant quote the final price?

The instant quote is an estimate. The Final Agreement shows the costs for the move as planned. In most cases, the final price differs from the Final Agreement by no more than about $200. Estimated fuel and tolls are reconciled against receipts at delivery. Date changes, waiting, or other circumstances covered by the agreement may affect the amount due.

How much will the driver’s travel cost?

It depends on where the assigned driver starts and finishes, the available flights or other transportation, and how far ahead you book. Our standard estimate assumes roughly four weeks’ notice. Last-minute arrangements often cost more. The specific travel cost appears in your Final Agreement before you pay the deposit.

Who books the driver’s transportation?

We coordinate the driver’s required airfare, Amtrak, rental car, shuttle, or rideshare. Your Final Agreement explains which travel costs are included and which ground transportation costs are additional. If a planned transport option is unavailable, we will discuss the alternative and any added cost with you.

Are overnight hotels included?

Hotels during the drive from pickup to delivery are included as described in the Final Agreement. An additional hotel night may be needed if the driver must arrive the night before pickup, pickup is scheduled after 10 a.m., or travel arrangements require an extra night. How do I pay?

The Final Agreement states the amounts and due dates. Payment one, the nonrefundable deposit, is paid by credit card. Payments two and three, due at pickup and delivery, can be made by Zelle, wire transfer, cash, or cashier’s check. Credit cards are not accepted for payments two and three. Estimated fuel and tolls are paid at pickup; actual receipts are used to settle the difference at delivery.

What additional charges are possible?

The Final Agreement explains the circumstances. They may include waiting time, an extra hotel night, a date change that increases driver travel costs, or additional ground transportation. Actual fuel and tolls can differ from the pickup estimate. Ask us about any line in your agreement before paying the deposit.

What if I cancel or change the date?

The deposit is nonrefundable if you cancel. If you change the date after booking, the assigned driver may not be available, and you are responsible for any new airfare or other travel costs caused by the change. Contact us as soon as you know your plans have changed; your Final Agreement contains the terms for your booking.

Protection and responsibility

What protection do I need from the rental company?

You purchase the required protection from the rental company at your expense. For U-Haul, we require SafeMove Plus and, if towing on a U-Haul Auto Transporter, Towing Insurance (TWI). For Budget, we require the Complete Protection Package and, if towing, Auto Tow Protection (ATP). Our driver must be named as a Primary or Additional Driver on the rental agreement, which must stay in the truck. We help you confirm these requirements before pickup.

Who is responsible for the rented truck?

You remain the renter under the rental agreement when our authorized driver operates the truck. The rental agreement, purchased protection, and your Final Agreement describe the responsibilities that apply. Read our full explanation of truck responsibility.

What happens if the rental truck or trailer breaks down?

Safety comes first. Your driver contacts the rental company’s roadside assistance, keeps you informed, documents the problem, and follows the safe course for the truck and trailer. Do not assume an unsafe vehicle should be driven to a hotel. Read Frank’s firsthand breakdown guide.

Towing a car

Can you tow my car behind the rental truck?

Yes, when the rental company approves the truck, vehicle, and Auto Transporter combination and we accept the arrangement. The rental company supplies the Auto Transporter. We do not tow on a tow dolly. The towing charge appears in your quote and Final Agreement. Read our towing guidance.

Can I leave belongings in the car being towed?

No. The towed vehicle must be empty, including the passenger area and trunk. Keeping it empty helps prevent theft and avoids drawing attention during overnight stops. Move your belongings into the rental truck before pickup.

Why does the driver need my keys?

The driver needs the ignition key to the towed car in case it must be moved or transferred to another Auto Transporter during a roadside problem. The driver also needs the key to the rental truck’s cargo padlock in case access is required during the trip or at an inspection.

Timing and next steps

How far does the driver travel in a day?

Our drivers typically plan 550 to 600 miles on a full driving day when conditions permit. Applicable DOT rules allow up to 11 hours of driving after the required rest period; that is a maximum, not a minimum or a fixed mileage rule. Traffic, weather, terrain, road conditions, and safe stops affect the actual distance.
